From Frying Pan To Fire: Manchester United and David Moyes suffer defeat in Japan

share on:

Manchester United suffered their second defeat in three pre-season matches as J League outfit Yokohama F Marinos struck late to sink David Moyes’ men 3-2.

Jesse Lingard had scored another goal to continue his impressive run of form but despite holding a half-time lead, United were unable to keep their advantage.

Shinji Kagawa was named man of the match but could inspire United to victory, with Yoshihito Fujita netting the winner three minutes from time.

The hosts struck after just 30 seconds, with striker Marquinhos pouncing on some poor United defending after a David De Gea save, and David Moyes’ men were visibly knocked in confidence by the Japanese side.

Yokohama, who sit third in the J League with their season currently still going, burst straight out of the blocks with the goal and didn’t look back from there, continuing to press a bewildered United defence into a handful of mistakes.

Wilfried Zaha was United’s main outlet though, and midway through the first half his right-wing trickery paid dividends as he dribbled directly at a struggling Yokohama defence who couldn’t deal with his pace. His cross was blocked but Lingard swept home to continue his excellent pre-season form.

An own-goal from Yokohama in comedic circumstances then gave United the lead, as keeper Enomoto came off his line to catch an in-swinging free-kick. Enomoto misjudged the flight however and the ball cruised over his head, leaving defender Tashiro to tap inexplicably into his own goal.

Yokohama wouldn’t subside however, and an Aguiar header from a corner before Fujita’s late strike consigned United to yet another disappointing friendly defeat.
