Director of hit sci-fi action movie Independence Day, Roland Emmerich has confirmed that the movie’s original star Will Smith would not be appearing in the sequel.
Emmerich cited financial constrains as well as Smith’s popularity as the reasons behind the drop.
“Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name,” he said. “It would be too much.
“We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new.”
It was announced last week that the sequel to the 1996 hit has a planned release date of July 3, 2015, 19 years after the original exploded into cinemas. There’s still no official word on whether Bill Pullman will be back or not.
