Hundreds of high-risk offenders could soon be forced to wear alcohol monitoring ankle bracelets.
Corrections Minister Anne Tolley has today revealed a proposal which will see the tamperproof device attached to some offenders who are not supposed to drink alcohol as a condition of their sentence.
The ankle monitor, which is similar to one worn by troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, costs around $1800
It keeps track of alcohol consumption by measuring sweat and increases in body temperature. If an offender drinks alcohol, the bracelet detects and records the change in temperature and reports the breach back to a monitoring centre.
Accordingly, Corrections can then report the incident to police and have the person arrested.
