The World Wide Web is 20 years Old: When did you start using the internet?

share on:

Happy birthday in arrears to the world wide web (www). It turned 20 years, yesterday April 30.

It’s existence dates back to April 30, 1993, when the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, announced it was making the World Wide Web technology freely available to the public. The technology spread around the globe like wildfire, and now it’s hard to imagine an aspect of our lives that is not, in some way, influenced by the web.

The web was invented by British physicist Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, and was originally conceived as a method for physicists around the world to share information.

Prior to the web, information was shared over the internet in less user-friendly ways such as WAIS and Gopher. Berners-Lee developed the web software using a NeXT computer, created by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

CERN is marking the anniversary with a project to restore the first website and “preserve the digital assets that are associated with the birth of the web.” To see the first website, click here, and to learn more about the project, click here.

***********EDITOR’S NOTE*****************************************************

For me, I’d say I started using the internet in 2000. That’s some 13 years ago. I opened my first email segzy-godschildz@yahoo.com, then I opened a second one in 2002 after I forgot the password to the first. That was segzchildz@yahoo.com. I used this for another two years before I opened segunsd@yahoo.com.

I also remember I had a crush on Jennifer Lopez so one of the first things I  did was to get her email address and send her emails and tell her how much I loved her and she should give her life to Christ. Lol.

Bizarre times. I also had my first website around that time, courtesy of freeservers.com. What else, I used to connect through cyber cafes mostly and send emails to pretty girls (mostly).

Subsequently, I started doing a lot more from reading stuff (news, stories) to Nairalanding to always Googling “Make Money Online”. I  knew basically almost everything from Affiliate Marketing, to Forex Trading, to Paid-Per-Clicks, HYIP’s, Blogging, Web Designing.

Then I started Facebooking in 2008, joined Twitter in 2009. Joined StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, Bebo, GooglePlus subsequently. Had my first blog too in 2008 on wordpress.

All through my years, I had stumbled on a few x-rated sites a couple of times, thanks to Yahoo Messenger Spammers.

And I here I am with you… writing.

What is your own internet story?
