The study, commissioned by confectioners Lindt, found that to maximise the effect, people should try reclining on a sofa in a cream coloured room that is heated to 67.6F, the Daily Express reported.
They can also pick up a book, avoid social networking sites and wear loose fitting clothes.
Scientists offered these advices after studying how 1,000 volunteers relaxed.
The study also revealed that cream coloured room was the most soothing while black, orange and brown walls were the least comforting.
The findings also said that drinking red wine and eating chocolate together helps people to unwind.
Amy Walsh, of Sussex University’s Mindlab, said that when observing brain patterns they found the two combine to create enhanced relaxation and contentment.
