See Gobe: 1.7million wrote UTME today, but only 500,000 admission spaces exist

share on:

According to announcement made by The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), over 1.7 million candidates registered for the UTME and sat for the exam this year, an increase of 13.35 percent compared to last years.

The Minister Of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai, made it known at a news conference in Abuja while invigilating the UTME that there is only space for one-third of these applicants while the remaining candidates who may even pass the admission cut-off mark, may never get admitted.

She however went further to reveal that the current capacity of tertiary institutions across the country is only about 500,000 this she notes cannot cater for the 1.7 million candidates who sat for the UTME this year.

Professor Rufai made it clear that with only over 122 institutions in the country (both private and public), the challenge currently facing the nation’s tertiary education cannot easily be resolved as it gets more complicated due to over-subscription of applicants to federal universities because of its low and affordable tuition.

A total of 99,195 candidates applied for placement at the University of Lagos that has a carrying capacity of a little above 6,000 which is a similar scenario with almost all public institutions, she said.
