Teachers Council Blames Mass Failure In Schools On Youth Corpers

A damning verdict has been passed on graduates who partake in the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps by the Teachers Council which blamed the high rate of failure witnessed in various examinations on the youth corps members who are posted to teach without being qualified.

The Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, on Tuesday, while reacting to an allegation by the FG that they’re partly to blame for the mass failures, called on the leadership of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to stop the deployment of corps members, who lack basic knowledge of teaching, to teach in schools.

The Director of Operations of the Council, Steve Nwokocha, made the declaration at the maiden induction/graduation of 118 Professional Diploma in Education graduates held at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta.

“The issue of having mass failure is a process. Part of the people contributing to the process are these corpers. It is an abuse to our profession,” he said.

“Government should stop posting youth corpers to teach in schools. We at the council are against posting of NYSC without teaching background to schools,” he added.

While clarifying his stand, Mr. Nwokocha argued that only graduates of education should be posted to schools, saying the council was ready to rid the country of quack and fake teachers.

“What we are saying is that NYSC should make sure that only corps members who read education should be deployed to schools. Our council is against the deployment of graduates to schools,” he emphasised.

Following a new NYSC posting policy, majority of graduates who partake in the NYSC program annually, are posted to schools to teach.

  1. I strongly agree with the argument by Mr Nwokocha. I hope whoever woke up on the wrong side of the bed to impose teaching on schools, sleeps again to awaken and make a sound judgement regarding placement priorities of the incumbent/prospective corpers.

  2. the parties to blame are state govt who can not employment qualified teacher but dey depend on nysc corpers without paying, the corps member who do not have expirence of teacher because experience s d best teacher, the school who promise promise to render asistance to student during their exam, the weac invigilators n supervisors who collect bribe from school 4 schools 2 render asistance 2 student, the student of nowadays who r nt ready 2 learn, the private schools who prefer sheep labour which result to employment of unqualified teacher, the nysc who post untrain teacher to school n public school teachers who r nt ready 2 work but collect salaries @ d end of d month lastly lack of proper supervision 4m federal ministry of education
