After making his international debut as a second-half substitute in Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Venezuela, Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi is hoping he has impressed enough for coach Stephen Keshi to include him for the African Nation’s Cup in 2013.
“Any professional wants to play at the highest level,” he told BBC Sport.
“It’s something I’m really excited about – and hopefully, if I’m selected, we can do something great.”
Nigeria will take on African champions Zambia, as well as Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, in Group C of the finals, which run between 19 January and 10 February in South Africa.
Ameobi, whose Nations Cup dreams may displease Newcastle United Alan Pardew, played half an hour against the Latin Americans.
Ameobi earned special praise from fans and officials after helping set up the third goal and the 31-year-old insists he has nothing but respect for his team-mates.
“It’s my first game, I just feel honoured to play international football,” he added.
