Road to the Headies – BEST ‘R&B/Pop album’ ‘R&B Single’ ‘African Artiste’ Clinical Analyses

Nominees for Best R&B/Pop album

Superstar- Wizkid

Supersun- Bez

Versus- 9ice

The invasion- P-Square

This category seems cobbled together at the last minute and reads like no one had a clue what they were doing here. The kind folks at the Headies must be the only persons that are not aware that 9ice actually put out a two-in-one record and that double discs coalesce to form a single album. Singling out ‘Versus’ for recognition smacks of laziness at best and mischief at worst as it was actually the weaker disc and ‘Bashorun Gaa’ would have put up more of a challenge.

‘Supersun’s’ inclusion here is also suspect as it is not necessarily a Pop nor an R&B record and was shut out of the Album of the year category where it would have been more comfortable.

This leaves us with ‘Superstar’ and ‘The Invasion’. They are two of the year’s biggest discs and the Headies team thought so highly of them, they were included in the all-important ‘Album of the year list’ (the others weren’t) suggesting that they actually represent the best of their genres. Following this logic, one of the two will be announced winner of this category and will be better positioned to win Album of the year come 20, October. The safest bet would be to tip Wizkid’s ‘Superstar’ over ‘The invasion’.

Best R&B Single nominees

Private trips- Wande Coal

That stupid song- Bez, Praiz

Nawti- Olu Maintain

Soundtrack- May D

Love me (3x)- Tiwa Savage

It is great to see Tiwa Savage battling it out with the guys but the Headies is mostly a big boys club so she may not advance much. If you are willing to stretch your imagination as to what passes for R&B these days, the nominees are pretty rock solid and any of them could take this one. But we are predicting a Bez clean sweep come awards night and we’ll just put this down as one more in the bag for ‘That stupid song’.

Best African artiste

Sarkodie (Ghana)- Azonto

Camp mulla (Kenya)- Feel no pain

D-Black (Ghana)- Get on the dance floor

Zahara (South Africa)- Loliwe

With all due respect to the other nominees, there is really only one name we see here and it is Ghana’s Sarkodie. This has been the year of the Azonto dance and he has had a phenomenal year riding the waves.
