The organizers of the Design Workshop Series are delighted to announce the confirmation of Kunle Afolayan multiple award-winning Nollywood filmmaker, Ohimai Atafo creative director of the MAI Lifestyle fashion brand and Yinka Davies Nigerian Idols’ judge and 2007 NMA Voice of the Decade as speakers for the eleventh (11th) edition of the DWSeries.
Kunle Afolayan, scion of the renowned Nigerian theatre pioneer, Ade ‘Ade Love’ Afolayan, famously dumped a career in banking to pursue a diploma in film-making at the prestigious New York Film Academy NYFA. This decision and a strong eye for quality has led to the production of three (3) ground-breaking movies: Irapada (2007), Figurine (2010) and
Phone Swap (2012); with each setting an unprecedented standard in the local film industry- Nollywood. Afolayan was educated at the Lagos State University LASU where he received a degree in Accounting.
Ohimai Atafo, arguably Nigeria’s most cerebral fashion designer runs a fashion cum lifestyle brand that he seeks to build into a world-class one. ‘Mai’ as he is fondly called has a cumulative ten years’ experience in branding, marketing and merchandising. He was responsible for the appealing brand campaigns at Guinness Nigeria Plc. till a couple of years ago and has exhibited at international fashion festivals including the Arise Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos. He is respected for his iconic wedding collections, some of which have been adorned by top celebrities locally and internationally. When Mai isn’t designing clothes, he is a compere, speaker, mentor or critic. He currently sits as the Senior fashion editor at Nigeria’s Genevieve magazine.
Yinka Davies was named the Nigerian Music Awards NMA ‘Voice of the Decade’ in 2007. She is respected as one of Nigeria’s best vocalists, a hallmark that has earned her a place on the Nigerian Idols’ jury. Yinka’s greatest asset is her voice; that unmistakable energy of the stunningly sonorous voice that touches the soul. Yinka Davies has been compared to
Eartha Kitt because she can perform any style: Jazz, R n’ B, Afrobeat, Pop, Soul and Alternative. She is an artiste who makes music easy to listen to while using intricate traditional folklore parables from the home front. Yinka who was a one-time lead vocalist in Lagbaja’s Colours band has done collaborations with local and international music acts and her latest album, Black Chiffon has been getting rave reviews.
Established in 2011, the DWSeries has become a major avenue for consistent interaction between industry practitioners and students or willing youths, hence bridging the gap between the two worlds and challenging young minds to creativity and focus. Set on the main campus of the University of Lagos, the Design Workshop Series has received an enthusiastic response from the audience as the forward-looking, experimental and context sensitive show.
In December 2011, the organizing committee decided to re-work the workshop series by introducing a system where industry practitioners who have made a reputation out of careers in the creative economy: art, architecture, cinema, literature & music; are invited to keep the lectures expository and interesting. Since 25th February 2012, Tunde Kelani, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Paul Kodje, Bez Idakula, Omoyemi Akerele, Dapo Akintunde and a myriad of others have graced the DWSeries stage to deliver thought-provoking sessions.
