J.E’s PIECES OF ME: I Was There (Poem) – Dedicated to 03.06.12.

share on:

I was there…
I was there when it happened
I remember it clearly
The day the sky blackened
One second…floating fearlessly past lazy clouds
The next
Free-falling like a stone from a height

It all started with a quake…then a jolt…and then, a lurch
I could feel fear shiver down my spine, caressing me with goose-pimples
Our faces mirrored the same expression
FEAR: full formed fright
Fear…of the Known Unknown
Fear…of what is to become
Yet unwilling to welcome it

Then it happened.

I was there and I felt it
The rush of the wind as we raced against it
Unclothing the aircraft’s metal-wear in abandoned violence
I saw it
The frenzied frantic search for escape
And the despair of hopelessness when escape escaped us
I saw them
Husbands, Fathers, Sons
Wives, Mothers, Daughters
….and Children
I saw as generations were hastily prepared to meet an unprepared end

Then we hit the dirt
Dulled silence as pain zinged through our bodies

I was there and I saw it
RED: Fire and Blood
I smelt it
The acrid smell of burning flesh
Mere mortals mauled into contourless forms
An arm here
A head there
I was there

…Then darkness engulfed
Big black smoke snaked through the crevices of the shattered craft
Slithering silently towards us
Demarcating the living and the dead

I was there, and I saw us
All 153 of us
Different in shapes and sizes
Yet alike in procession
Moving weightlessly towards the other side
Making our way, silently towards our rest.

“Weep not for us too long
But let our memories be a song
Sang in your hearts forever
In remembrance of times shared together”

In 4 words - Confused, Lost, Crazy, Curious, In 3 words - Stinks of greatness. In 2 words - Unpredictably Intelligent. In 1 word - Creative. They say "...deeply erotic and sexual. Evoking fantasies beyond imagination...not your everyday poet. Yet flipping her over reveals another side....a talented and skilled nature decorated by a vivid imagination that turns dreams into ideas and eventually into elegant designs (www.oobejune.wordpress.com). Then again, beneath all these lies a mushy and emotional core....the source of the beauty that is June Ebube. In simple terms, she reflects the persona of a strong woman, the dream of the modern man!"
