R&B, Soul, Afro Pop singer and songwriter ‘JLYRICZ’ born Victor Akajiofor-Jones is about to give the Nigerian and African music in general a face-lift. JLYRICZ studied Science Laboratory Technology at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu where he graduated in 2010.
JLYRICZ was born June 12th 1986 and he is the first amongst five siblings. His sound can be described as soft sonorous, light and melodic. He grew up listening to Majek Fashek, Orits Wiliki, Ras Kimono, Fela, Oliver de Coque, Ebenezer Obey, Bright Chimezie, Michael Jackson, Mc Hammer, The Commodores, Lionel Richie, Abba amongst others. This watered his love for music and was noticeable at a very young age. Unlike most singers, JLYRICZ was not groomed in the church and he had to teach himself to write lyrics to music and sing though he sees the former as a gift.
His love for music grew as he came in contact with other genres of music – Seal, Enya, Beethoven, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, Boys2Men, Anthony Hamilton, Bruno Mars, Corrinne Bailey Rae, Imogen Heap, Coldplay, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco are artistes that helped shape JLYRICZ and made him understand that music goes beyond being classified into genres.
JLYRICZ started out as a dancer in the 4-man group ULTra which comprises himself, AB, Yung-E and Tim. The group later morphed into a R&B group but with other members occupied with personal engagements he decided to record solo. With the group he has performed at various shows and events notable at the Miss South-South beauty pageant which was held in Bayelsa in 2006. He has also performed solo at a couple of shows.
Singers Mr Cool, Waje and Shifi of Styl-plus have all commended his songwriting skills. With the release of Echo and Halima he hopes to start making his mark on the Nigerian music scene and the world in general.
