There are 925 million undernourished people in the world today. That means one in seven people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact he number one risk to health worldwide greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Among the key causes of hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment.
Recently, financial and economic crises have pushed more people into hunger. As well as the obvious sort of hunger resulting from an empty stomach, there is also the hidden hunger of micro-nutrient deficiencies which make people susceptible to infectious diseases, impair physical and mental development and reduce labour productivity increasing the risk of premature death.
Hunger does not only weigh on the individual, it also imposes a crushing economic burden on the developing world. Economists estimate that every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5-10 percent in lifetime earnings.
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in marking the World Hunger Day on 28th May, 2012, the Premiere of the Nigeria Food Industry Awards will be taking place on that very day alongside The Hunger Fair on 28th of May, 2012.
The Hunger Fair is a green-carpet and black-tie event that will allow guests to BUY-FOR-CHARITY from various companies and organizations that will be present to exhibit exotic items for sale at flexible rates. The proceeds made by all these companies and organization thereafter, at the green carpet will be donated to charity organizations that will also be present at the event.
The “Nigeria Food Industry Awards” is a consumer choice award, an initiative of a group of young Nigerians that used leading independent research firm to conduct surveys in major Nigerian cities. This is a novelty in Nigeria as the winners are determined by both the consumers and a panel of judges. It covers a broad range of categories of interest to both the public and business communities. Its purpose is to recognize, celebrate and reward innovative individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in the Nigeria food industry.
Our Objectives are:
1) To recognize, celebrate and reward innovative individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in the Nigeria food industry, thereby safeguarding the health of Nigerians and contributing to the reduction of global fatality due to hunger as we join the rest of the world to celebrate the 2012 World Hunger Day on May 28.
2) To create healthy competition amongst Nigeria food companies, an activity that will encourage the improvement of food quality, safety, hygiene and services that will ultimately safeguard the health of Nigerians and reduce hunger in the world at large.”
