Oroma Cookey-Gam is the creative director and head designer of ALALI boutique. Young at heart and not so fresh on the fashion scene, she was nominated as one of the finalists for the Young Designer of the Year award at the MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2011. She is a Nigerian woman with a penchant for fashion and an eye for pretty things. Mayreejay chats with her about her most recent collection, COLOUR ME PRETTY by ALALI BOUTIQUE – S/S12.

Mayreejay: Tell us about you?
Oroma Cookey-Gam for Alali Boutique(OCG for Alali): Oroma Cookey-Gam is a lighthearted 25-year-old with big dreams hoping the world let’s her achieve them.

Mayreejay: Can you tell us more about your brand, ALALI BOUTIQUE?
OCG for Alali: ALALI Boutique is an internationally relevant ready to wear fashion label for the modern stylish woman.

Mayreejay: What is the difference between your first collection and the current one, Colour Me Pretty?
OCG for Alali:  All the ALALI collections to date (including the sample range) have retained the same effortless stylish aesthetic with flowing fabric and soft silhouettes. Every season, I try to offer the ALALI woman something different while staying true to her style.  I suppose the only difference between the collections is that as I develop as a designer, they seem to be getting more focused. With the ALALI Fall collection however, the direction is a bit more experimental and structured.  This is due to be released next month! Hope its received well.

Mayreejay: How has the journey been since your emergence as a fashion designer?
OCG for Alali:  It’s been quite exciting and engaging with unavoidable stressful spells. I love what I’m doing so nothing else matters. I like the way the brand has been accepted and I’m looking to forward to seeing ALALI in the next 2 years and beyond.

Mayreejay: Any fashion/trunk shows in the works?
OCG for Alali: Not sure at the moment.  I have a few things in the works for the next few months. Will keep you posted!

Mayreejay: Which shows have you been involved in?
OCG for Alali:  I participated in the MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2011, where I was shortlisted for the young designer of the year award as Creative director of ALALI Boutique.

Mayreejay: Who would you love to see wearing your designs?
OCG for Alali:  Anyone who rocks ALALI well will do! Nothing brings me more joy. In terms of celebrities, I would love to see Alexa Chung in  an ALALI Boutique design.

Mayreejay: Who is the ALALI target market?
OCG for Alali: The young at heart stylish woman who loves clothes, fashion and has got style.

Mayreejay: Who is the ALALI Woman?
OCG for Alali: The ALALI woman is effortless, she never tries too hard.  She does not steal attention but acquires recognition. She dresses for herself and not for men. She has a subtle sexiness to her.  She is the definition of the casual chic elegance.

Mayreejay: What do you do to relax?
OCG for Alali: Sketch, listen to music, browse my tumblr dashboard, read a book, or go horse riding or swimming.

Mayreejay: Tell us something we don’t know about you besides your love for fashion?
OCG for Alali:  I secretly wish I was a furniture designer and think I’ve got the best ideas in my head but that’s where it ends – in my head…

Here is the lookbook for the  COLOUR ME PRETTY collection. Enjoy.
