Born Bibisanmi Sofowote on March 30, 1990 to Nigerian parents Olusegun and Adefunke, Bibi’s love of music is no surprise given his family’s long and rich history of involvement with the arts. With a widely respected singer/songwriter father (who was also one of the first radio broadcasters in Sub-Saharan Africa), an author-poet mother, a KORA-nominated singer sister (- KORA being one of Africa’s highest music awards), and a critically-acclaimed flutist brother, it might even have been considered strange if Bibi had not displayed a strong musical inclination from early on in his life.
Performing before large audiences before he was barely 3, he has grown and nurtured his art and his sound to what it is today. His musical influences cut across the ages and genres from Mozart, Chopin, Steven Cravis, Luciano Pavarotti, Andre Bocelli, Josh Groban, Enya and Yanni to Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley, to Michael Jackson and Johnny Nash, to Phil Collins, Michael Bolton and Seal to R. Kelly, Usher, Craig David, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz and Asa.
Bibi has been likened to his all-time favorite musical hero, Michael Jackson since before he was old enough to ride a bike. His striking resemblance to the King of Pop (slightly less obvious now than in former times, but nevertheless still quite apparent) and their almost identical singing voices earned him the nickname “Michael” when he was 9.
With a degree in Information Communication Technology, Bibi is also a poet, published author, internet blogger and stage actor. Using the internet, Bibi has since 2005 made his work available in the public domain and his latest slew of pop singles are unquestionably his best out yet.
