360FASHION SPOTLIGHT: OSEI – DURO

share on:

Happy Friday everyone! I always rave about designers who are consistent with signature pieces and every collection has a comprehensive theme that is a follow up from the previous collection.  I absolutely love those designers. It is always a warm and settling feeling to spot a designer’s iconic piece(s) and be able to say – “that looks like a Deola Sagoe frock” or “it’s definitely Ejiro Amos Tafiri inspired”.

While it’s always nice to have follow up collections year in year out, it is also refreshing and liberating in a rebellious sense to have the occasional designer that is unpredictable. Today’s Fashion spotlight brings you just that; Osei-Duro, a design label with so many diverse collections its a fashion packed task to actually keep up.

Osei-Duro was created by Maryanne Mathias and Molly Keogh as a one-time experiment of design and production in a completely unknown place: Ghana, West Africa. The project has now evolved into textile based collections that take traditional production techniques, bringing them into new shape and form.

FASHION WITH A CONSCIENCE
The Osei-Duro label is well accomplished with charity work and giving back to society. Their latest project is the Dzidefo Women’s Cooperative.

The Dzidefo Women’s Cooperative has 10 members who work out of the Ryvanz-Mia Orphanage, in Kpando, Ghana. Each member has a role, such as treasurer or fabric buyer, and each member also puts a percentage of her earnings back into the business. By working closely with the women Osei-Duro is able to teach new skills, pay fairly, and maintain good quality as well.
