L.Marshall is one of the most exciting and creative talents to emerge from the Nigerian/UK scene in recent years. Born in London to an English father and Nigerian mother, he moved to Brazil aged 3 and then on to Nigeria at 10 before heading to the UK 6 years ago. This diverse upbringing has certainly influenced him to blend the different styles which make up his sound.
L came on the scene with ‘My Ex’ in 2009 which arrested the attention of many music lovers and most importantly, opened L to the industry. It’s been all about the wait ever since with L spending every day making music at his home studio with his two brothers, recording and writing his own material as well as for other artists. L was also completing his University degree in the process.
Only less than four months after graduation,L got his first break in January 2011 featuring on Wretch 32’s hit single ‘Traktor’ with a number 4 debut in the UK singles charts and still currently a heavily rotated track across the country. L then started working on his debut album and mixtape ‘The Wait’. Amidst this, L penned ‘How we roll’ for Loick Essien which hit number 2 spot in the UK singles chart over the summer and one of the biggest tunes today. He has since then written for Kelis, JLS, Mz Bratt, collaborated with Maxsta, Roxxann, Benny Banks, and Sincere.
With the industry buzzing over L’s remarkable talent blend of singer/rapper/songwriter, L soon bagged a record and publishing deal with Mercury and Sony. L has also been on the road throughout the year performing with the likes of Wretch 32 and Tinie Tempah for MTV, 2011 Bigga Fish tour, as well as industry respected events such as ILuvLive and YoYo’s.
Needless to say, L has certainly set the scene for 2012. His debut mixtape ‘The Wait’ introduces L.Marshall the artist. It’s a celebration of his talent and the launch of what has already been a remarkable music career so far. At this point, we can only look forward to more music from L.Marshall.
The video of the leading track ‘The Wait’ has been shot by Emil Nava, to be released shortly. Proudly Nigerian, L gives a shout out to ‘L.A.G’ (Lagos) on this track in the mixtape. L Marshall’s ‘The Wait’ mixtape is available for free download HERE:
