The year 2011 has been one fashion filled ride with its ups and downs in Nigeria and in other parts of the world. We have experienced beautiful fashion moments like the moment we set our eyes upon the Ituen Basi’s ankara crash helmets or when Versace collaborated with H&M to make high end fashion more accessible. These were wow moments for sure!
In no particular order we’ve taken the liberty of bringing you the top 10 iconic fashion moments of 2011 locally and internationally.
ITUEN BASI STORMS ARISE WITH ANKARA CRASH HELMETS
I have done quite a number of articles on Ituen Basi’s crash helmets. I’ve had the liberty of wearing one and they feel so empowering for a lady it is surreal. That aside, I remember the exact spot I was backstage at ARISE MAGAZINE FASHION WEEK. We were behind schedule (as usual) and Ituen Basi began whipping out these grand Ankara crash helmets on her models. Everyone let out a gasp and it was pandemonium as the models walked on the runway. It made front page of THISDAY STYLE the next Sunday. True genius!
TIWA SAVAGE SHOWS “A LITTLE TOO MUCH” CLEAVAGE IN MUSIC VIDEO
Tiwa Savage has always been known to push boundaries with her music, outfits and onstage performances. After her smash hit single “Kele Kele Love” came the release of “Love Me Love Me Love Me” and ofcourse the video. The video featured close ups of Tiwa’s bust barely covered underneath an edgy feathered cropped jacket and ofcourse Tiwa Savage in sexy spanx and a tiny stripped bandeau.
Nigerians went WILD! When the video was released with hypocrites such as MTV Base censoring her exposed bust, I mean if it were Beyonce or Rihanna’s video they wouldn’t dare censor anything.
Dear Tiwa, everyone at 360nobs loves the video and we applaud you for breaking boundaries. Can’t wait for the next one.
LANRE DA SILVA FALLS OFF STAGE AT ARISE FASHION WEEK NY
In Lanre Da Silva’s defense, the lights on the runway were too bright, there were no ushers to direct her as to how exactly she should maneuver her way towards the runway and yes I bet she was a bit nervous. All in all, the video of her taking a hard fall was repeatedly shown on UK’S ITV4. Guess who has the last laugh now?
TOJU FOYEH DEBUTS NEW COLLECTION AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
Talented Nigerian designer Toju Foyeh placed herself on the international scene by hosting a private show during New York Fashion Week 2011. The show featured a brand new collection from the designer, pieces included; black lace, gold fabrics, slits and cutting edge red carpet dresses.
KATE MIDDLETON WEARS ALEXANDER McQUEEN TO HER ROYAL WEDDING
Who can forget the Royal wedding of 2011???? Kate Middleton said “I DO” to her boyfriend of nine year; Prince William. A very important factor of any wedding is the bride’s dress and the level of curiosity over Kate Middleton’s dress reached fever pitch. The dress and the designer; Alexander McQueen were kept top secret till the day of the event and it was everything I could possibly imagine; conservative yet sexy in that rare demure and beautiful manner. Soon bridal shops around the world began creating replicas for brides everywhere!
MAI ATAFO BRIDAL COLLECTION EMULATES THE ROYAL WEDDING
The always amazing Mai Atafo debuted a bridal collection with perfect timing- right after the royal wedding. The collection included bridal gown of different cuts and styles and ofcourse rapper and ex-beauty queen Munachi and Big Brother All Stars winner Uti Nwachukwu shared that now famous kiss a la Prince William and Kate Middleton. Soon blogs and online social networks were going crazy over rumour of a blossoming relationship between Muna and Uti. Yeahhh they’re just friends, sorry to burst your bubble.
BEYONCE ROCKS HER BEST FASHION ACCESSORY- A BABY BUMP
Beyonce surprises us all by donning the ultimate fashion accessory at this year’s VMAS- A baby bump. After so many years of speculation about her plans for starting a family, she completely took the world by surprise by affectionately rubbing her bump that was well tucked underneath an Emilio Pucci orange kaftan. All we have to do is sit and wait for her to pop out.
GREY INTRODUCES NIGERIANS TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOUR BLOCKING
Before most of you caught up with the colour blocking trend, urban design label “GREY” was light years ahead with their ARISE MAGAZINE FASHION WEEK collection which featured already colour blocked dresses, smocks and tie dye pieces that were styled to perfection. A few weeks later, their pieces were flying off the racks.
MAKI OH’S- “YOU SEE EVERYTHING YET YOU SEE NOTHING” DRESS
All hail Maki Oh, the true fabric manipulator! Maki Oh’s pieces are pure undiluted art and she didn’t fall short of delivery during MTN LAGOS FASHION AND DESIGN WEEK 2011. I like to call this dress- “YOU SEE EVERYTHING YET YOU SEE NOTHING”.
VERSACE FOR H&M
This year, fashion lovers living on a high street budget were treated to Versace pieces courtesy of H&M’s collaboration with high fashion label- Versace. The collection featured distressed leather, a contrast of floral dresses, and neon tights. December reports state however, that Versace for H&M pieces are being returned by customers. Guess it did not live up to the hype. Ouch!
