360Tribute to Heavy D, Plus some memorable tracks that rocked Nigeria

share on:

Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, was an American rapper, actor and producer born in Jamaica. Heavy D made a name for himself when he, alongside G-Whiz, Eddie F and T.Roy formed the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz which he led for a number of years spanning from the 80’s to the 90’s.

Over the years Heavy D & the Boyz released a number of hits including but not limited to; Mr. Big Stuff, Don’t be afraid and Now that we found Love (refer to the bottom of this page to listen to those made available) which became equally famous in Nigeria. Heavy D and the Boyz rocked all parties back in the 90’s and a party without a track featuring Heavy D in the 90’s could be likened to one without a Shina Peters track. There was this unsaid diss/belittling aimed at anyone who couldn’t spit the lines of Don’t be afraid back then as it was one of the dope tracks of the period and im sure Pawpaw of the Aki N’ Pawpaw fame would agree with me on this as Pawpaw spitting the lines of the song in the movie Mr. Ibu is about 80%-90% of the result you get when you search for Don’t be Afraid using the lyrics. Heavy D tracks are till this day still used as movie soundtracks and those that saw the movie Hitch starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes might remember the crazy dance moves at the wedding scene (video inserted below) to the song Now that we found Love.

Apart from putting out hugely popular tracks, Heavy D also appeared in a number of television series movies such as Life (starring Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence), Step Up and Tower Heist alongside Ben Stiller & Eddie Murphy. He also featured on Michael Jackson’s song Jam and performed at an event held for the Late King of Pop in Cardiff City.

Heavy D died on Tuesday the 8th of November in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after collapsing at his Beverly Hills home and it has been reported that his death was as a result of respiratory distress. The rap icon who is survived by his wife and 13yrs old daughter Xea, will be missed by tons of fans and lovers of his work.
