Ituen Basi and Alexander Wang are two very different designers. Alexander Wang is famous for his black, white and grey hues which he constantly uses for to construct pieces that celebrate minimalistic chic.
Occasionally, he pulls a rabbit out of a top by venturing outside his signature look with spikes and studs on dresses that would otherwise be viewed as simple and minimalistic.
Ituen Basi is internationally recognized for her cutting edge take on the ever so popular Ankara fabric. She showed us and the rest of the world a completely new dimension with which Ankara fabric could be deconstructed, taken apart, mixed and put back together for garment construction.
360nobs fashion has been following New York Fashion Week closely, so you can imagine our surprise when models for Alexander Wang came on the runway in monochrome printed gear complete with a patterned crash helmet.
Rewind six months back at the Arise Magazine Fashion Week, where Ituen Basi debuted her Ankara crash helmets complete with futuristic aso oke dresses and two piece looks. I remember that very moment backstage when I saw her whip out the helmets to put on the models, I was in awe… I mean who thinks of Ankara helmets? Only Ituen Basi.
Considering the fact that her helmets gained international reviews from world class media houses such as the Washington Post and American motorcycle websites and magazines, it wouldn’t be a far stretch to coyly put in that there is a possibility Alexander Wang came across these images and drew inspiration from them.
That being said, the rest of Alexander wang’s collection for New York Fashion Week deviates from his signature look. This collection features patterned fabrics that have been constructed for “modern-city-girl-meets-versatile-sportswear”. The collection is incredibly liberating as it makes gym wear appear very chic and fashionable. Nothing like wearing your gym gear to a dinner date ey?
