Wunmi Olufeko, owner and head designer of Design for love (DFL)started her journey five(5) years ago. Born out of her desire to infuse her love for arts into designing classy outfits for women. Her brand’s philosophy is classy-elegance. Her designs are for women who are not afraid to always be in the lime light!!!
Mayreejay (M): How did you get into fashion?
Design For Love (DFL): I think from a very early age I had always loved creating things and drawing. I never really set out to go into fashion designing because of my restless nature, I had thought I could never have the patience to sew an outfit. I see designing as a way of expressing my artistic self. I apparently took to designing clothes when I was working in Abuja in a bid to pass time during leisure.
M: What is fashion and style to you?
DFL: Fashion for me is a way of life, my style is “my logo” so to speak, style is very much individualistic.
M: Who is(are) your role models?
DFL: My role models would be Diane von Furstenberg for her creation of the iconic knit jersey wrap dress and her constant support for women related causes. The second person would be Mrs Ibukun Awosika, who without knowing instilled the principle of personal integrity in doing business.
M: How long have you been in the industry?
DFL: I have been in fashion for 7 years now.
M: What have been your high points and low points in the industry so far?
DFL: My high moments would be everytime a client’s outfit is appreciated and when DFL clutch bags saw the light of day after so much time developing the line. The low moments would be the frustration of running a business in Nigeria without being able to access funds to expand the business.
M: What inspires your collections?
DFL: I am inspired by the need to let go of the restrictions involved in wearing African ethnic fabrics. In the past, African ethnic fabrics were seen as too traditional and drab looking, but with our blend of more contemporary fabrics and styles – the average woman can now wear a DFL outfit to work, play and party. We have introduced these fabrics in making accessories like our bags that can complement other contemporary outfits or styles. This collection is inspired by the everyday woman. The outfits are easy to wear and can swing from being a business casual outfit to an after office cocktail wear.
M: What fashion shows have you been involved in?
DFL: So far, DFL has showcased her collections at the City people Ankara show and also the Enconium’s Black and White ball.
M: Who is a DFL woman?
DFL: The DFL woman is an understated beauty who does not need to try hard to catch attention.
M: Who would you love to see wearing your pieces?
DFL: I would love to see Helen Prest-Ajayi wear a DFL piece.
M: How can we spot a DFL piece?
DFL: A DFL outfit can be spotted in our choice of handmade embellishments we include in our outfits which come in form of our rolled corsages and choice of using ankara to make these.
M: Where do you see DFL five(5) years from now?
DFL: Five years from now, we would have developed a more inclusive lifestyle fashion outlet where clients can have their clothing and accessories at one shop. And definitely, DFL would be a stronger brand with a more international appeal.
