There is something about WAJE, I’ll try my best to explain it. There is a certain form of humility that glows from within her, you cannot help but become drawn to her. It is very rare in every sense of the word to meet a recording artist these days that is so relatable, within 10 minutes of meeting her I feel like I’ve known her all my life!! How does that happen?
She arrives a bit late for our shoot and as soon as she waltzes in through the door she is so apologetic, that I have to give her a big hug. In hot pursuit is the SOUNDCITY filming crew, I am not surprised because we were told that they’ll be filming her throughout the day. However, I wonder how to act when the cameras start rolling. Do I wear my prescription glasses? I am about to start WAJE’S make up and I always have my glasses on to wear make up for models, singers etc. Do I stay completely num throughout filming or do I just “BE ME” and gush about her new single “SO INSPIRED”, I mean have you seen the dance moves in that video? The EJIRO AMOS TAFIRI blazers? Droolfest!
I do what I always do when I am unsure of the situation, I keep quiet. I refuse to look up and speak with anyone or make eye contact, just as I am about to start picking outfits WAJE rolls her eyes and yells; “You better make me BEAUTIFUL”. To me that’s all it took, I burst out laughing and pass a sarcastic comment. I am finally at ease and I start making my usual jokes, I whip out a dozen eyelash extensions and WAJE squeals and tells me she’s taking them home with her. Fair enough! All through the shoot and until Muna arrives, there is humour filled banter that flies back and forth it feels like she is a genuine friend, I mean the girl has some serious punch lines and I am almost rolling on the floor.
Muna arrives and is just as funny and down to earth, these girls really know how to not take themselves seriously. They have inside jokes, and there is zero tolerance for fakeness. The shoot is in motion and there is an aura of ease with WAJE and MUNA in front of the camera, there are no try hard pouts of hips being thrust back in an attempt to look sexy.
When I ask WAJE about her reason for the single “SO INSPIRED”, she shares that she was going through a difficult time in her life and after complaining to MUNA about her issues, they got to the studio and birthed the single as a means of fighting back. WAJE says; SO INSPIRED tells everyone out there that no matter what it is you are going through, it is not important how many times you fall, look within you and see just how God sees you and you can conquer the mightiest giant with the smallest stone.
Once the shoot is over, it is safe to say I am truly inspired by these ladies. I started this shoot with no knowledge that I would learn an essential lesson about relating to people. I have learnt that it is important to truly be yourself and be comfortable in your skin. People love the girl who doesn’t take herself too seriously or isn’t scared to say she wants to look beautiful. People are attracted to humility as it is so rare these days.
So every day I will tell myself I am beautiful and I won’t look down and avoid eye contact when I am unsure. Instead I will blurt out the silly things that dance in my head and pass sarcastic comments because at the end of the day that is who I am. And why not be yourself? Everyone after all is already taken. I am inspired by WAJE AND MUNA!
