The magnificent and specially commissioned trophy for Guinness The Match The Conquest was unveiled last Thursday, May, 26, 2011 by 2 of the Nation’s soccer legends – Christian Chukwu and Mathematical Segun Odegbami.

The duo who are the oldest and most respected former captains of the Super Eagles senior national team because of the indelible mark they left on the footprints of the country’s football history, unveiled the spectacular trophy at a special ceremony held in Abuja.

LTR: Christain Chukwu(Nigerian Green Eagles Hero), Adenike Adebola(Guinness Marketing manager) and Segun Odegbami (Nigerian Green Eagles Hero)

Proudly Nigerian, the trophy is designed and inspired by Nigerians and comprises three main elements – the football, the mighty eagle and the steps of glory; each bearing a meaning that runs deep and true to the beautiful game of football.

  • The football stands tall at the centre of two eagle wings, depicting the match between two forces to be reckoned with in football – Argentina and Nigeria.
  • The eagle soars with its wings spread wide as a symbol of strength and pride.   As a major part of the history of Nigeria, the eagle stands in Nigeria’s Coat of Arms and on The Conquest, its wings recreate the shape of the two major rivers that flow through Nigeria – River Niger and River Benue.
  • The Steps of Glory on The Conquest represent the path to greatness as well as the glory and satisfaction that comes from reaching out, progressing from one level to the next until victory is achieved.  That moment when the entire world joins the celebration and acknowledges that as a team you went, saw and truly conquered.

Adebola Adenike, the Marketing Manager, Guinness® commented on the design and creation of the trophy, saying:

“The design and creation of The Conquest was a collaborative effort between a number of talented artists who were commissioned to create an endearing masterpiece to depict purpose and represent the pursuit of it.  It is a symbol that ignites passion and the desire to triumph and serves as an excellent mark of victory.   The team, has indeed produced a beautiful, timeless trophy, which demonstrates creativity, imagination and pure passion for football.”

After the reveal,  the great motivator who successfully captained the Eagles to 3  Nations Cup championships in 1976, 1978 and 1980 –  Christian Chukwu, had this to say about the magnificent trophy

The Conquest is a sight to behold and will inspire both teams to demonstrate the very best of their passion and skills and walk away with the honour of being the first ever team to be crowned victors in Guinness The Match.  Naturally though, my hopes are that the Super Eagles will next Wednesday rewrite history and on the fourth time of competing against Argentina at senior national level, will win and keep this trophy here where it belongs in Nigeria.”

The 43-capped & arguably Nigeria’s most prolific right winger ever – Segun Odegbami added to the words of the Current Coach of Heartland Football Club of Owerri by saying:

“Guinness The Match will be a demanding test of the skills and team work of both teams.  It is certain to be an action packed 90 minutes that will enthral all football fans in the country.  The Conquest is a spectacular trophy that beautifully epitomises the spirit of both our nation and our passion for football. It is certain to be well deserved by the team that lifts it on the day.  May the best team win – my hope is of course that it will be the Super Eagles who are the conquerors.”
