Bola Yinka-Obebe is the CEO/Creative director of Marayah O. The graduate of Economics from University of Ilorin delved into fashion out of a need to satisfy her unique sense of style and petite size of clothing. She took a course in design, pattern making and garment construction at Ginani fashion school in Surulere, Lagos.
She moved to TAE as a designer/ pattern maker, and soon became the product line manager for the design house. A Perception Management/PR firm became the next stop. There she worked till February 2010.
With the launch of her fashion line Marayah O in 2011 with a look book which i was a stylist for, i decided to ask her a few questions so that you know more about the lady (pictures from her lookbook are included).
Fashion Phoenix(FP): TELL US ABOUT THE BRAND, MARAYAH O?.
BOLA YINKA-OBEBE(BYO): Marayah O is a fashion and lifestyle brand. Though our immediate focus at present is the female ready-to-wear line. As we grow, we will expand to accommodate all other aspects of fashion and lifestyle. As a team, it is important to us that we offer more than just products or services to our clients. It is important that the Marayah O woman is celebrated and appreciated beyond what she wears. This is an important part of our existence.
FP: WHAT INSPIRED YOU INTO BECOMING A DESIGNER?
BYO: My petite size and my sense of style. That was the PUSH.
FP: WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM.. AND HOW DO YOU COIN THE NAMES OF YOUR PIECES?
BYO: Inspiration comes from anywhere and just about anything. Hmm, coining names for my pieces..this usually comes as a last minute process, its hardly ever premeditated. If its ever premeditated and I don’t do it at that very moment, then its likely to come with another creative wave(usually stronger) which overshadows the older.
FP: FOR THE READERS TO KNOW MORE ABOUT BOLA YINKA OBEBE, I’D LIKE TO ASK WHO YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS(LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL) ARE?
BYO: Its hard to pick a favourite. They all have something which appeals to me at different times – it could be creativity, simplicity, organization, business accumen. So really, it is a difficult one but if i must pick names though, I will say Elie Saab, Alexander Mcqueen (appeals to a part of me that might never find expression) and locally, I Love Deola Sagoe, JBL, TAE, Ejiro Amos Tafiri.
FP: WHAT IS YOUR ASPIRATION FOR “MARAYAH O”AND WHERE DO YOU SEE IT IN 5 YEARS?
BYO: In five years, we would have integrated our couture, men and accessory lines. We also hope to have grown our Ready To Wear (RTW) production to a mass level.
FP: WHAT WORD OF ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR UPCOMING DESIGNERS?
BYO: Just do what you have to do and show it to the world. It doesnt have to be perfect. People evolve and so does a brand. Do not allow self criticism hold you back. JUST DO IT!
