BIZNESS B4 PLEASURE: LAS GIDI’S SLOWLY EMERGING NITE-CLUB CULTURE

share on:

I, Nnamdi @N6bitch Nwabasili have lived in Lagos State for a very Looooong time.  I have seen the Good, Bad, Ugly and Hideous sides of Las-Gidi and I must say that…THINGS ARE CHANGING!.

During Our Days.. (cheei!! Nwanne, I’ve just sounded like a very Old Man), precisely during the Military era, there was a lot of insecurity in the land.  Back then, most, if not all businesses shut down latest by 6pm.  And everyone scurried home; Night Travel was unheard of. Gbomo Gbomo, Ritualist Kidnappings, Suspicious Abductions,Weird disappearances were the order of the day.

My Dad used to tell us all the time that… “Abali di Egwu!” (that’s Ibo for….The Night is Terribly Dangerous!…..OR somfin like dat lol!)

Most Parties back then were House-Parties. Once there was a friend with a free house, the rest of us raised money for a DJ, printing of invitations, food and Drinks and Voila! “Party don set”.  The rest na to invite babes and then vote amongst us; The person with the Most “Mind” that could stand at the gate and do “All Boyz Outtt!”.   Most Parties started around 5pm_ish and ended before 11pm. Midnight was worst case scenario. Matter of fact, if you even did rent a Club for a Party, they most times rocked between the same hours as the House Parties.

I remember then if you took a babe/babes on a date, their mothers used to freak out that they wanted their daughters back home early.  There were No All-nite Concerts and all-Nite Clubbing was regarded as a Looooooooong Tin… (and this was waaaaay before Dbanj’s first album believe me).

HOW THE SHIFT IN PARADIGMS CHANGED EVERYTHING leading to THE SLOW RE-EMERGENCE OF NITE-LIFE IN LAS-GIDI

Exit the military and with the Advent of Demo-Cracy, a new Grand Pa came to the Villa; while a nu bespectacled Young-Baba entered Alausa, and that’s when things started to morph and really get interesting. Streetlights started to appear on major Lagos roads, the menace of OPC/Area-Boys started abaitting and altogether a better security situation started to unfold.  Now people started to have the liver to stay out a bit later. The Owambes/Parties that used to end by 11pm now stretched to 1am, but if this party was on the Island it STILL wasn’t exactly safe to make the long drive back to the Mainland just yet.

FASHOLA’S TENURE AND ITS EFFECTS ON NITECLUBS AND THE NEW CLUBBING CULTURE

·         Exit Bola at Alausa and enter the guy we picked instead of Musiliu.
·         No be New tin say Fashola dey work, so i’m not gonna go into details about his achievements. I’m neither his Sycophant nor his Chief Publicity Secretary.
·         But the street lights became brighter, there was a police van at almost every major road junction, criminal activities were even further reduced; so alternatively people started having liver to stay out Longer. The Parties that used to end by 1am now started stretching till 3am. Businesses even started closing late, although up till now there is STILL only 1 place to order Chinese all night in Victoria Island, and everyone in their “Prime” goes there after clubbing.

WETIN START THIS GIST

Believe this or not but the average Lagos hangout-spot, bar and nite club has NEPA/PHCN to thank for their emerging fortunes.

LET ME GIVE YOU A BRIEF EXPLANATION

I was working in the studio with @Xelaxelz and @yungmaxy the other day when the generator went off,
all efforts to revive this over-used appliance didn’t work so we were faced with the reality of spending the night without electricity. It was a very welcome decision when @Xelaxelz said we should go to the Club (any club) rather than staying in the heat being romanced by mosquitoes. Now bear in mind that this was a Tuesday so I was very skeptical that we could find any places that could be rocking.  But lo and behold, to my greatest surprise we ended up club hopping and hit about 3-4 fully packed clubs that night.

NA THE SAME LAGOS WEY I KNOW BE THIS????

I remember that my mom used to freak out anytime we wanted to go to a party and come back late.  Fast forward to the Fashola Lagos and my kid sista who isn’t even close to 20 yrs of age and (who is my only sister BTW) went to Unplugged over the Xmas hols, and I saw a massive collection of “juvy babes” there.  Back in my day, I never went to anything that lasted all night unless I sneaked out for it. I remember that even when Eve and Usher came to Lagos to perform for the first time it was a Daytime Concert.

Now my same mother even follows us to the all night concerts (even though its once in Half a Decade), she only stayed out all night to see Beyonce Live at THISDAY and that was it…but I kinda understand my Mom…ALLLL her friends were there….lol (my mom is a mega Diva, but she is another story for another day).

I also remember that when my sister’s SET in High School (they were about 16 at d time) threw a party, it was at a club and started by 6-7pm and ran til about 1am; with lots of cars filled with drivers and apprehensive older brothers like myself waiting to take them home.  Now the “Juvies” don’t even throw parties anymore they go regular clubbing with the rest of us Adults…everyone has had that WTF moment at ClubAmywineHouse……….. (get it?! Wink, lol! DecodeIf Your smart)…….like why are there soo many juvies in here?????????????????

Imagine my surprise when I was entering @Tiwaworks #ABE this christmas and seeing my kid sis in VIP?….(Major Gulp moment…my baby’s all grown…sob, sob!)

SUMMARY WEY USE STYLE DEY OFF POINT BUT ITS STILL RELEVANT

Please we all need to COME out and Vote; come Rain, Sleet, Snow,Hurricane, Earthquake, Typhoon  Tornado or Tsunami.

Credible Leaders create a positive, healthy, safe and vibrant atmosphere for businesses and humans to thrive plus enjoy and make a Living without fear for their property and personal safety.

The small small developments we have seen since Bola, Raji and the Great Broom Wielding Party took over have been greatly influential to seeing this dream turn reality.

All of a sudden you understand that your parents weren’t being wicked to you while you were growing up; its not that they are more lenient to your younger siblings and were stricter with you!

It’s just that you both are from 2 very different Nigerias.

God forbid but supposing YOU experienced a CIVIL WAR (although I don’t get that terminology; because there is absolutely Nothing Civil about a WAR except that civillians get killed).

So, ENJOY yourself to the fullest when next you stay out all night.

Its been a long time coming and its Your Right to catch your Maximum Trips as you Like.

You NO suppose look Uche face!

Leave the Juvies to rock na their time Joor!

I hope with this few points of mine i’ve further Confused you and Not Convinced You???

  1. Lol.

But so true N6. Peeps definitely need to go out and vote!! I hope and pray we do.

You hit the nail on the head with this. It’s like it just all of a sudden made sense to me: “All of a sudden you understand that your parents weren’t being wicked to you while you were growing up; it’s not that they are more lenient to your younger siblings and were stricter with you! It’s just that you both are from 2 very different Nigerias.”

Lagos is definitely different, in a good way, and it’s great. Ditto the memories of gbomo-gbomo warnings and ritualists warnings from parents/guardians. Sigh, how things have changed a little. We thank God.

    Haha @ “ClubAmywineHouse”.

    #RSVP.

  2. So true, so on point. @ the same time, soo old…..lol. U’ve got to have finished secondary schoool b4 2000 to appreciate fhis maan! Nice looking out 6, plus it’s all true.

  3. lol nice one. true i rem the first time ma sis went out all night without telling ma parents we all expected ma mum to skin her alive but was surprised wen she juat asked if she was ok and advised dat she shuld let her know in future so she ll know i was safe. times have indeed changed.

  4. N6, had to go back and read some of your previous articles. Congratulations are in order man, because you have grown.
I admit I don’t know who you are but some past comments were acidic.
Your conclusion was way OT, but we do have to go out enmasse, register and vote for a NIGERIA where there is provision of the base-est of amenities(did that even make sense?)
Neways, I applaud your writeup….keep it coming!

  5. Loves this article, N6. Some people here wanna run their mouths about all Nigeria’s problems and how they feel unsafe in Lagos. I ask them…when last did you go home? Lagos is more beautiful and much safer; if some chick hasn’t killed Noble Igwe and some angry dudes haven’t jumped him yet…Lagos is safer. I kid.
Seriously though, great things are happening at home in states like Lagos, Edo and Kwara, we just gotta keep supporting the right people.

  6. if u re the last of ur siblings .. parents re usually less strict cos they re tired of talkn n also cos they feel theyve done a gr8 deal of a gud job with ur siblings so even if u fk up .. they dont really appear as faliures . if u threw house parties when u were younger .. it wz because it ws a houseparty era but now .. its a club hopping era n u re old thts why u see lots of young ppl in d club . sum fathers went out till early in d morning back in d day .. where d fk did u tink they went to ??

they re more criminals now than back when we were in secondary school .. its not a security reason n u shouldnt use lagos as a case study.

face the fact .. u just got older !!
