So there I was watching MTV Base while switching the other channels in PIP mode; when I come across a new video which looked pretty good. I saw the name Michael Ross and wondered which new Nigerian act this was. Went thru my repertoire of mp3s and came up empty. Googled the name and lo & behold, kat wasn’t Nigerian …this is the 360Fresh on the Ugandan RnB King.

Michael Ross Kakooza – 26, was born into a family of fourteen in Kampala, Uganda. He started as a dancer while in primary through to College. During His primary school years, he and three other talented youngsters started a performing group which they affectionately named Boys in Rhythm and was guided by business entrepreneur Peter Sematimba at Makindye’s Dungeon studio. Unfortunately the group soon disbanded due to schooling commitments.

While at college, Michael adopted the stage name ‘Ross‘ as he resumed his passion for dancing. His performances were staged in schools, universities and various public shows. His early success was making an appearance in a music video by the defunct hip hop group Klear Kuts in a song entitled ‘All I wanna know‘. Following the completion of his college studies in 2002, super music producer Steve Jean signed him up, the first single of the efforts ‘Senorita‘ became a local hit and was a stand out debut for a long time. His performances earned him the gong for ‘Best RnB single’ in the 2003 Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) awards.

The initial music success was soon followed with several successful productions, smash hits like ‘How do you love somebody’ and ‘Yo the one‘ gained wider regional success with huge air play and rotation on the East Africa Television, this success resulted into a second nomination for the PAM music awards. In 2005 Michael launched his long awaited debut album entitled ‘Yo the one’ and went on to achieve critical acclaims among music lovers and reviewers. Michael’s latest project has seen him come out singing in local languages (luganda, swahili) in addition to English, this is a conscious decision on his part to reach his ever growing fan base in the whole of East African region, songs like ‘Yooyo’, have alreay earned him double nominations in PAM awards (Uganda) and Kisima awards (Kenya). Michael has staged numerous performances throughtout East Africa. (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi).

He has curtain raised and performed along side some of the biggest international stars, most recently Shaggy, Tevin Campbell and Kevin Lyttle. His musical story continues to evolve with his soon to be released untitled album featuring the current chart topper ‘Nalulungi.’ The 11 tracks album has an assortment of both R&B and local afro-pop songs with songs like Be with you, Nakupenda, Nkwetaaga, the chart topping Nalulungi and Yoyo and the master collaboration with Moze Radio called Hadilini.
