With just under a week to the Start of the FIFA World Cup, Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has been ruled out due to his inability to shake off a knee injury. Mikel had been out of action since injuring his knee playing for his club Chelsea in April, but he joined up with the Super Eagles squad at their training camp last week.
According to a team official, Mikel withdrew from the team because he did not want to aggravate the knee injury and waste a slot on the squad(True Patriot).
Promising Uncapped Sochaux forward/midfielder Brown Ideye has been recalled (He was one of the 7 initially axed) up by Coach Lars Lagerback to replace John Mikel Obi.
Mikel joins Chelsea club team-mates Michael Essien (Ghana) & Michael Ballack (Germany) in missing the World Cup. Didier Drogba (Cote D’Voire Ivory Coast) is also a major doubt. Seems like Chelsea has jinxed all its prolific players; Ashley Cole & John Terry beware!!!
The Super Eagles will play their final tune-up match later on today (Sunday) against North Korea.
Nigeria are drawn in Group B along with 2-time champions – Argentina, 2004 Euro Tourney winners: Greece and 2002 World Cup semi-finalists: South Korea and play their first match on June 12 against Argentina.
Please go out and support the Super Eagles. Remember in the words of KNaan …Wave Yo Flag. Peep the Nigerian mix below with Banky W & MI.
