Road To The Headies: “Song Of The Year – Best Pop Single” Clinical Analysis

Hello everyone, this week, we’ll be analyzing the Headies category –  “Song Of The Year, Best Pop Single”

Nominees

Chop my money(remix) - P-Square ft Akon
Dami Duro – Davido
Oliver Twist – D’Banj
Gaga Crazy – Chuddy K
Kukere – Iyanya

The year’s biggest songs are pretty much represented here so this list is really hard to fault. At first glance, this looks like one of those close to call slug fests but a closer watch nullifies any such heightened hopes. While all the songs are deserving of their mentions, it is hard to see D’Banj’ s ‘Oliver not emerging triumphant.

You see ‘Oliver’ was more than a song, it was an idea, a marketing tool that erupted into something the music scene hasn’t witnessed in a long while (maybe forever). It became the Nigerian song that could and it did. Iyanya and Davido had their moments but truth be told, they stand no chance.

Kukere remains a guilty pleasure, as effective on the dancefloor as it is off it, providing a peep into the former project fame winner’s roots. Dami duro‘ is essentially beautiful noise; not always coherent, not too tasking but always fabulous. As a party starter, Chop my money is faultless and the inclusion of Akon helps it mightily but beyond the dancefloor, it might not enjoy much relevance.

Chuddy K‘s monster hit had us all going gaga crazy but like every quick fix, the effects are rather fleeting. What should have been nominated- It is a packed and truly reflective list but here’s sparing a thought for Wizkid‘s ‘Pakurumo and Brymo‘s ‘Ara would have brought in some variety to the list.

What should win:

Oliver- D’Banj

If for nothing else, it enjoys massive support both at home and abroad, something the other songs cannot quite claim even with Akon‘s high profile presence. D’Banj might not be able to sing a lick, and the lyrics may not inspire hope in a whole new generation but Don Jazzy‘s beat paired with D’banj‘s showmanship is simply irresistible.

What will win:

Oliver- D’Banj

The same nominees make up the Pop single category and it is expected whoever takes song of the year takes pop single as well. Only natural. Stranger things have happened though and Kukere or indeed Chop my money could make a spirited claim for pop single. It remains Oliver‘s game to lose though.
