50-Cent

Rapper turned actor Curtis Jackson a.k.a 50 Cent, popularly referred to as Fiddy, spent the best part of 2010 and the beginning of this year (2011) working on his sports-themed movie Things Fall Apart which was directed by Mario Van Pebbles and went to unexpected lengths to get the job done. Fiddy reportedly lost over 50 pounds to play the role of a promising professional football player prospect in his senior year in college, whose career is challenged after he discovers that he has cancer. Apart from the weight loss, fiddy even got the tattoos on his arms removed when he considered the amount of work that would be done to have them covered in front of the camera.

Unfortunately for Fiddy, Things actually started to fall apart (a bit) when he was contacted by Chinua Achebe’s legal team to change the title of his movie as it shared the name with his novel of the same title which has sold over 8million copies worldwide till date and regarded as one of the best literary works to come out of Africa. Fiddy unaware of the status attained by the book published in 1958 (17 years before 50 Cent’s birth) allegedly attempted to keep the title of the novel and tried to drop a lil something something to the tune of a whooping $1 Million. However Achebe took this as an insult and his lawyers stuck to their guns and requested for the title to be changed saying even £1Billion wouldn’t make ‘em settle.

To avoid legal issues and delay the release of the movie, the distributing company Image Entertainment agreed to change the title of the movie to All Things Fall Apart. Though this might affect the movie in terms of marketing and all, they figure it beats going to war with a Nigerian literary scholar…
