The Underground had its 5th edition on April 30, 2011 at Ember Creek and was powered by an emerging tshirt line called Cool Beans. The Underground, which is an open mic night for upcoming artistes, is aimed at discovering future stars by providing a platform for them to showcase their talent to an audience filled with friends, future fans, critics, scouts, label owners and producers.
This event, accepted by many as a legitimate platform to scout for up-and-coming talent had 15acts cutting across different genres – from rap, to r & b to soul to Afro Pop. As always, the crowd was explosive with more than 500 people in attendance which included many notable big acts.
The Host for the evening was the ever lively Illrymz. The event had Djinee, Lami Phillips, Toolz (The Beat 99.9FM), Wana Udobang (Inspiration FM) and our own music man Oye AKD (360Nobs.com) as celebrity judges for the night. There were dope performances from Oshman (Underground IV winner) & Show Dem Camp performing their hit singles “Farabale” and “What you waiting for“. Also making a guest performance was (yoits) Beazy (who still keeps wowing us with his BeazyMusicMondays #BMM) who performed his new single “Over and Over”
The event started out with performances from 15 contestants and following the votes from the crowd, it was pruned down to the top 4 – Boom Eye, Irene, Wendy and Pro-D. With different amazing unique styles, it was all up for the judges to make the final decision on who would be the winner for the 5th edition of the Underground.
The wait was over as Boom Eye emerged the 5th winner of the Undeground with his single titled “Gboron” (means listen). Boom Eye whose real name is Olubunmi Ibiloye goes away with a host of prizes ranging from free clothing to free studio time with one of Nigeria’s best producers. The full list is below:
